WNYPGA Member Lonnie Nielsen Wins PGA Quarter Century Championship

(L-R) of Bob Dickson, Bill Erfurth and Lonnie Nielson

PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. – Some familiar names rose to the top of the scoreboard during the final round of the 61st PGA Quarter Century Championship presented by Premier Golf and GOLF ADVISOR, as former Tour players Lonnie Nielsen and Bob Dickson won their respective age divisions.

Nielsen, who won twice on the Champions Tour, blistered the Ryder Course at PGA Golf Club, despite cool conditions and 20 mph wind gusts, shooting a 6-under-par 66 today. His two-day total of 135, enabled him to win the 64-and-Under Division by one stroke over first-round leader Gene Fieger. Nielsen, 61, made seven birdies in the final round, including clutch putts on the final two holes to earn $3,600, and his first Quarter Century Championship.

“I had a good day on the greens. When your putter is working, the game is easy,” said Nielsen, a resident of both Orchard Park, New York, and Palm Beach Gardens, Florida, who has endured two knee replacements in recent years.

Dickson, the 1967 U.S. Amateur and British Amateur Champion, who has won on both the PGA Tour and Champions Tour, shot a final-round 70 on the Wanamaker Course for a 137 total, and a four-stroke victory in the 65-and-Over Division over Bill Schumaker of Columbia City, Indiana. Opening-round leader Pete Oakley, of Palm City, Florida, shot 77 today to finish tied for third, six shots off the pace.

“The greens were perfect, tournament speed,” said Dickson, 70, of Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida, who earned $3,150 for the win.

Dickson returned to the game last March after suffering a broken foot. “I was striking the ball well today, and my putting was good,” he added. “I grew up in Oklahoma, and I’m used to weather like this. I learned how to hit the ball low back then, and it paid off today.”

The oldest competitor in the field, Bill Erfurth, 85, of Northbrook, Illinois, won the PGA Half Century Championship for PGA members with 50 years or more of service. In winning the PGA Half Century Championship for the fourth time, Erfurth shot a pair of 74s, or 22 strokes below his age over two days.

In the entire 65-and-Over Division, Erfurth finished tied for 14th.

“I putted pretty well for two days, and I got some lucky breaks,” said Erfurth, who served as PGA Head Professional for 20 years at Skokie Country Club in Glencoe, Illinois.

Jerry Impellittiere, of Palm City, made a hole-in-one today with a 5-iron on the 153-yard par-3 12th hole of the Ryder Course. He finished tied for fifth in the 64-and-Under Division.

The 61st PGA Quarter Century Championship presented by Premier Golf and GOLF ADVISOR is the first of six PGA Winter Championships conducted at PGA Golf Club during January and February. The Championships continue with the Senior Stroke Play Championship, Jan. 13-15.
